Filmed between 2004 and 2021, this documentary film features interviews and performance footage of the people who built the city’s jazz and blues club scenes over the past 25 years or more. These include Lin Dongfu, owner of the House of Blues & Jazz and Ren Yuqing, founder of the JZ Club. Some of the city’s most popular and influential jazz musicians and singers are featured in the film, including Jasmine Chen, Coco Zhao, Alec Haavik, Greg Smith, Wilson Chen, Peng Fei, Li Xiaochuan, and many others. The film also has a historical section looking at the early history of jazz in Shanghai in the 1920s-1940s and a section on how Chinese musicians such as Bao Zhengzhen continued to play jazz through the Cultural Revolution years.
Andrew Field is an Associate Professor of Chinese History at Duke Kunshan University in China. He is the author of several books on the history of music and dance scenes in China including Shanghai’s Dancing World, Shanghai Nightscapes (co-authored with James Farrer) and Rocking China.
